Plastic Challenge: Sarah Dondelinger, Week 1


Sometimes when I’m out late I just need a quick meal from somewhere. But these meals often contain some kind of plastic bottle or container. How can I avoid these issues but not always pack a meal when I’m going to be out late?

Full time student at University of California Santa Cruz. Double-majoring in Marine Biology and Earth Science. Sponsored stand up paddle boarder currently training races so I’m pretty much out and about every day working out and paddling. However, most of my meals are made at home. I have a bearded dragon which I constantly need to buy crickets for.

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
I can bring my own bag to get crickets rather than buying the pre-filled containers
My own container for salsa
Bringing my own container for coffee (which I usually try to do)

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Salsa! For my burritos
And the cream cheese for my bagel

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Bringing own food from home so I never have to buy things like the cream cheese.

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
There are many alternatives to accumulation of plastic. Even small steps at a time make a difference.
