Plastic Challenge: Becca and Gordon, Week 32

What do you do with old gift cards? Can they be recycled?

Location:Berkeley, California, United States

Name: Becca and Gordon

Week: 32

Personal Info:

Becca and Gordon’s personal blog:

Total items: 3

Total weight: 0.20 ounces

Items: Recyclable

Items: Nonrecyclable
– tag for climbing carabiner
– wrapper around bottle of vanilla

– gift card

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
None of the above, I think.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
gift cards

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
I buy vanilla in a glass bottle with a metal cap, but there is a plastic ring around the cap. I recently bought vanilla beans so that I could make my own vanilla (just add vodka and wait!), but the vanilla beans came in a small plastic bag.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
We ate out less this week, and had less plastic waste because of that.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?

Thanks, Beth! I knew you’d have some answers.
By the way, I wanted to update you on my race. I have 14 sponsors so far, each doing something to reduce their plastic waste so that I will run the half marathon. Some will be doing the plastic challenge here :)

Hi Becca. First, find out if the gift card can be refilled because if so, you could save it to refill and give to someone else. If not, you can send it to a gift card recycling program. Read about it here:
