Plastic Challenge: Cedar, Week 2

Location:, Ontario, Canada

Name: Cedar

Week: 2

Personal Info:

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)

Lots of things! I made myself a little fabric bag to take to bulk stores, fill with rice/seeds/whatever and bring back to empty into glass jars. I also have fiddled with my schedule to go to the farmer’s market twice a week, where I bring reusable containers and return cartons/baskets to vendors.

Total items collected: 15

Total weight:

Items: Recyclable
Soymilk container, tea bottle, tofu package, some of the plastic bags.

Items: Nonrecyclable
Disposable toothbrush head and wrapper, window from an envelope, window from a Kleenex box, some of the bags.

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
A lot of those were unnecessarily plastic-covered forms of foods that can be bought in bulk, like rice, pasta, etc. This week represents a bit of house cleaning I did, therefore a lot of these purchases are from weeks or months ago. It’s easily resolved for next week.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Shredded cheese, haha. Also these ‘specialty’ pre-seasoned rices, tofu, etc.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Still struggling with the tofu and soymilk, though I’m trying to get my protein from more diversified sources.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Like I said last week: thinking ahead, making from scratch, or going without.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Pre-shredded cheese.

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
