Plastic Challenge: Eve Stavros, Week 27

Location:Charlottesville, Virginia, United States

Name: Eve Stavros

Week: 27

Personal Info:

I recently retired early and moved from Florida to Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m fortunate to live in the basement apartment of my best friend’s beautiful log home, where I have time to garden, read, cook, play with my cat, Armani, and SLEEP! Living on a budget, but enjoying some travel — and most of all the time to enjoy the slow life.

Eve Stavros’s personal blog:

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
straws, to-go container lid, plastic fork

Total items collected: 26

Total weight: 2.4 oz

Items: Recyclable
Old: honey bear bottle #1 (1), honey bottle cap (1)
new: cream container & cap & ring #5 (2), plastic bag #4 (1), milk bottle cap & ring #4 (2), vinegar bottle cap (1), vitamin bottle cap (1), bar-b-q containers #0 (2) & lids (2)

Items: Nonrecyclable
New: light hook packaging (1), wire insulation (2), envelope windows (3), shipping tape (1), garlic sauce container from roommate (1), glass bottle seals (4)
Old: dental floss (1)

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Carolina bbq was from a road trip with a best friend. Should have brought my own to-go container. I’ll be ready for the next time!

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Because I have a housemate, and I often eat foods she has purchased, my plastic count includes some of her packaging. At least I can ensure it gets to the recycling center, if I can’t discourage her from buying the plastic options!
