Plastic Challenge: Eve Stavros, Week 5

Location:Charlottesville, Virginia, United States

Name: Eve Stavros

Week: 5

Personal Info:

I recently retired early and moved from Florida to Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m fortunate to live in the basement apartment of my best friend’s beautiful log home, where I have time to garden, read, cook, play with my cat, Armani, and SLEEP! Living on a budget, but enjoying some travel — and most of all the time to enjoy the slow life.

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
Frozen yogurt cup & lid, plus the usual bags, straws, etc.

Total items collected: 17

Total weight: 1.6 oz

Items: Recyclable
3 plastic packaging bags #4 (one I’d reused for bulk spices until it finally tore), 1 milk bottle cap #4

Items: Nonrecyclable
Old – 3 pens & markers, 1 photo slide, 3 photo negatives, 2 plastic labels from onion net bags
New – 1 prescription eye drop seal, 1 plastic wine seal, 1 plastic cork; 1 plastic shipping label/tape.

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
All my old mechanical pencils & pens – I’ve collected all my pens, markers & pencils (non-wooden) and will replace with wooden pencils & maybe a glass pen (if I can find a reasonable one). Or, use a metal pen. The plastic ones will be donated to a needy school.
The onion bags – I don’t buy them at all any more; these were saved from my landlord’s trash to be used to crochet a dish scrubbie (the one I made the same way has lasted more than a year!!!).
Wine cork & seal – be more careful about these choices!!!

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
prescription eye drop seals

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
hough the recorded books I receive through the online Paperback Swap sometimes have way too much plastic tape, it’s still better than consuming new plastic books. And I’ve added a note to my requestor conditions to ak for as little plastic in the shipping as possible!
