Plastic Challenge: Savannah Rudroff, Week 1



Can I buy hummus not in plastic containers, or should I just start making it myself?

I am currently a senior Marine Biology major at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I am taking the docent training class at the Seymour Center. I work as an events coordinator, so oftentimes my meals are away from home, prepared, and served to me.

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)

I couldn’t find a number on any of these.

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
I could easily use reusable glass tupperware instead of plastic sandwich bags. I could easily make my own popsicles rather than buy them.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
I’d be willing to give up Luna Bars and Fruit Snacks.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Cheese! Cough Drops!

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
I will have to make more homemade stuff.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Sandwich bags.

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
My plastic consumption this week is not accurate of how much plastic I usually use. This week I had more work events than normal, and no time for grocery shopping. I need to challenge myself to keep going in weeks that are more accurate of my plastic consumption even if I stopped using plastic bags and stopped buying popsicles.

I’ve tried to make hummus before and not had it turn out well, but was really excited to find this before a recent roadtrip (when I eat gallons) — http://loveandhummus.com/ — at Whole Foods! Hummus in glass! Yay!

Congratulations on committing to the challenge!
Regarding hummus, easy enough to make– I like Alton Brown’s Turbo Hummus. This recipe cheats and uses peanut butter (which you can get in your own container at New Leaf, Whole Foods, etc) and canned chickpeas (cook your own from scratch). Lots of other recipes out there of course.
If you haven’t access -or don’t want- a food processor (plastic!), try a blender. If neither appliance available, or too much trouble, consider purchasing what you want via the salad bar, deli counter, whatever, using your own container if possible.
