Tony Hancock, Ethical Ocean, Week 2

Tony Ethical Ocean plastic waste

Name: Tony Hancock
Week: 2

Personal Info:

I’m Tony from Ethical Ocean (www.ethicalocean.com). I’m a male and live in a house with two other people, and I work on our website from home.

Total items: 6

Total weight:

Items: Recyclable
none :(

Items: Nonrecyclable
3 plastic bags
One food wrapper (crackers)
One disposable razor
One Shisha mouthpiece

What items can I replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Again the plastic bags. I went to go pick up my laundry and it was pouring rain outside… My hamper is just a mesh bag, so the clothes I had just put in the dryer would have been soaked.

The razor was a left over from a trip where i left mine at home (I usually use a metal safety razor).

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
N/A

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Are there crackers that come without plastic wrap? I don’t think I’ve ever seen any…

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
I was very aware of how much plastic wrap we have for food products this week! I literally walked down the aisles of my supermarket going, “nope, can’t get that, nope, that has plastic.” I haven’t found free range eggs in paper yet, so I just didn’t buy any this week. The local bread in paper was easy to find though!

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
I can’t have any plastic bags next week. Rain or no rain!

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
I can see how reducing plastic is a habit based thing. There are so many everyday products you are used to just “picking up” on the way home. For example, I stopped to grab a candy bar this week, and realized the only one not in plastic is smarties – which I don’t buy because Nestle is a very unsustainable company. (actually now that I think about it, Caramilk might be foil wrap only…Will have to check it out this week.)
