Plastic Challenge: Sandy, Week 6

Still struggling with the TP bags. When we considered the shipping cost and cardboard that would be required to buy non plastic packaged tp online it didn’t make sense. Wish there was someplace local but they’re even going to have to ship it in.

I looked all over for antipersperant in a non plastic holder and couldn’t find it even at Whole Foods. Even Toms is in the stupid plastic thing. Also, no luck finding shampoo. Any south bay store suggestions?

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
We bought our chicken and fish directly from the butcher and asked him not to put any plastic wrap on it. He still used a bag to get it out of the display but didn’t include it in the package. It got a little soggy on the way home but not really. Next time will take a plastic tray.

Total items collected: 22

Total weight: 2.1 lbs

Items: Recyclable
4 Bags
2 bottles
Baklava tray

Items: Nonrecyclable
reused plastic veggie bag. Got mushy and so I tossed it.
TP wrapper
Plastic box for reading glasses. totally unnecessary
turkey meat container

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Don’t need to ever buy reading glasses in a plastic box.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
I’m giving up the plastic drink bottles as soon as I’ve accumulated enough for the window hangers.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
tp roll packages

Did a work around for my coin purse. I needed to change purses so I made a coin purse from a halls cough drop bag and some packaging tape. Will sew up one small bag for myself with a drawstring.

Is there an alternative to packaging tape? Hadn’t really thought about that.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
We need to figure out how to buy lunchmeat and cheeze without the plastic wrap. Still haven’t figured it out.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
bags, just need the will to carry things out by hand when we forget. An actually taking things out at the counter if they bag it.

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
My SO has some products that he hasn’t found alternatives for, soaps and advil. Will work on that.
